Research and Creative Works Conference

    Dear Adelphi Community,

As you are aware, the whole world is affected by the pandemic of the novel coronavirus, COVID-19. Many venues of public life have been temporarily closed to slow the spread of the virus, including the suspension of in-person activities on our own Adelphi campus and centers through the end of the semester. These are challenging times indeed, but we are proud of the way in which our community is rallying around these important measures.

As organizers of the 2020 Adelphi University Research and Creative Works Conference, we share your excitement about this annual celebration of academic discovery at Adelphi. The conference, scheduled for April 30, is a highlight of the Adelphi academic calendar. However, we have been faced with a difficult decision.  In addition to showcasing individual achievements, the goal of the conference has always been to foster a sense of community and togetherness.

In light of the current public health crisis and the need to minimize interpersonal contact, our University has moved all instruction to a remote format for the duration of the semester. Most residential students have left campus and there is no way to tell what the state of the world will be six weeks from now.  In light of this, it has become clear that the conference cannot go on as planned.

We have devoted a considerable amount of time to exploring alternative options. After careful consideration and following the lead of national conferences across several disciplines, we have come to the unfortunate conclusion that our hallmark event cannot be effectively accomplished in any other format. Therefore, we regret to announce that this year’s Research and Creative Works Conference will be cancelled.

We are acutely aware that this will be very disappointing to many members of the Adelphi community, as it is to us. We know that you have been working hard on your e-posters, oral presentations, interactive presentations and data blitzes. We are especially sympathetic towards those who are graduating in May and will leave Adelphi to take the next step in their individual paths. We also understand that many students rely on these presentations to meet academic requirements. As always, we will work to address these concerns as a community, and ask that faculty and academic departments advise students on how to fulfill any academic requirements.

Finally, we look forward to next year, and are exploring options to enhance the conference, including the possibility of expanding it to include our 2020 graduates to enable them to return and present their scholarship alongside the current students.

    Best wishes and stay safe,

The Research and Creative Works Conference Committee
